INSPIRATIONAL LEADER AND COMMUNITY ACTIVIST

THE HEART BEHIND THE MISSION

A LOVE THAT BECAME A LIFELONG COMMITMENT

Long before BeWhole Health Fest became a gathering place for thousands, the mission was personal. Tomika McFadden’s son, Kalvin, lived with cystic fibrosis—and his life, courage, and commitment to helping others shaped the work that followed.

After losing Kalvin in 2015, Tomika carried his spirit forward by creating spaces where families could find trusted health information, practical resources, joy, music, and genuine connection. The mission grew from grief, but it has always been sustained by love.

THE PURPOSE BEHIND THE MISSION

HEALTH EDUCATION BELONGS IN COMMUNITY

People deserve more than instructions about their health. They deserve access, dignity, culturally aware information, and experiences that meet them where they are. That belief has guided Tomika’s work for more than 25 years—from Tea Talk and Pennsylvania Care Associates to BeWhole Health Fest and the work she leads today.

THE MISSION IN OUR OWN WORDS

BUILT WITH COMMUNITY, FOR COMMUNITY

This Aetna Voices of Health video is a powerful testament to what becomes possible when health education, trusted resources, and genuine community connection come together. Pennsylvania Care Health & Wellness earned second place in the competition and received a $10,000 grant—recognition of a mission that was already changing lives.

More than an award, this moment affirmed the strength of a community-centered vision: meet people where they are, equip families with knowledge and support, and turn care into lasting impact.

THE MISSION CONTINUES

FROM ONE FAMILY’S STORY TO A MOVEMENT FOR WHOLE-PERSON WELLNESS

Today, Tomika brings the same community-rooted approach to books, speaking, workshops, health education, and organizational wellness experiences. The work continues to honor real people, real lives, and the belief that better health begins with understanding—not shame.
